What Is Spine Fusion Surgery?

Spine fusion surgery is a procedure in which two or more vertebrae in the spine are permanently joined together to eliminate motion between them.

This is often done to stabilise the spine, relieve pain, and prevent further damage caused by conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, or spinal instability. The goal of the surgery is to reduce pain and improve the function of the spine.

When Is Spine Fusion Needed?

Spine fusion surgery is typically recommended when conservative treatments, such as physical therapy or medication, have not provided sufficient relief for conditions such as:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal instability or deformities
  • Spinal fractures
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal Stenosis

The surgery is often considered when there is a risk of further damage or if the patient experiences significant pain or difficulty moving due to spinal instability. In addition, surgery is only considered if your doctor can pinpoint the exact source of your pain, such as a herniated disk or spinal stenosis.

How Is Spine Fusion Performed?

There are two main techniques used in performing spine fusion:

Traditional Spine Fusion: Spine surgery is traditionally “open surgery.” In this procedure, an incision is made, and the surgeon accesses the spine directly. Depending on the location, a bone graft is placed between the vertebrae to promote fusion. Metal hardware like screws and rods may also be used to stabilise the spine during the healing process.

Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion: Also sometimes called awake lumbar fusion, it accomplishes the same goal as open surgery, but through smaller incisions. Dr. Marcus Ling specialises in performing spine fusion endoscopically, using small incisions and a camera to guide the procedure. This method avoids the need for general anaesthesia, requiring only sedation and local anaesthesia. Because the incision is smaller with minimally invasive spine surgery, damage to muscles surrounding the spine is avoided. Typically this results in less pain after surgery and a faster recovery.  Patients can often be discharged on the same day as the surgery.

Conventional Technique: Spine fusion surgery typically requires general anesthesia, meaning the patient is fully asleep during the procedure. Minimally Invasive Technique: This minimally invasive technique can be performed without the patient being under general anaesthesia. Moderate sedation with local anaesthesia will suffice in such cases.

Traditional Spine Fusion: A larger incision is made, allowing the surgeon to access the spine directly. Depending on the specific condition, the surgeon may remove parts of the damaged disc, use bone grafts, and insert metal implants to stabilise the spine.

Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion: Dr. Marcus Ling uses endoscopic techniques, where smaller incisions and a camera are used to guide the procedure. This technique reduces tissue damage and allows for a quicker surgery with less post-operative pain.

How Long Does The Surgery Take?

Conventional Spine Fusion: This procedure typically takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity and number of levels being treated.

Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion: Dr. Marcus’s endoscopic technique generally takes less time than the traditional method, typically under 2 hours, due to the smaller incisions and precision of the minimally invasive approach.

Risks and Benefits of Spine Fusion Surgery

As with any surgery, spinal fusion surgery comes with both potential risks and benefits.

  • Pain Relief: Spine fusion can significantly reduce pain caused by spinal instability, degenerative disc disease, or deformities like scoliosis.
  • Improved Function: By stabilising the spine, spine fusion restores normal movement and function, helping you return to daily activities.
  • Minimised Post-Operative Pain: The minimally invasive nature of the procedure, including small incisions and reduced tissue disruption, leads to less post-operative pain and a quicker recovery.
  • Next-Day Discharge: Many patients who undergo minimally invasive spine fusion can be discharged within 23 hours after surgery.
  • Lower Risk of Infection: Smaller incisions reduce the risk of infection and promote faster healing.
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Nerve injury or damage to surrounding tissues
  • Failed fusion where the bones do not fuse properly
  • Blood clots or other complications, though these are rare with proper care

Recovery Time for Spine Fusion Surgery

Conventional Spine Fusion:

Recovery time can vary but typically requires a hospital stay of 2 to 4 days. Full recovery may take 3 to 6 months, with physical therapy often recommended to aid in regaining strength and flexibility.

Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion:

The recovery time is shorter. Most patients can be discharged within 23 hours after surgery, and many can return to light activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Full recovery may still take several months, but patients often experience less pain and a quicker return to normal daily activities.

How Much is Spine Fusion Surgery in Singapore?

The cost of spine fusion surgery in Singapore typically ranges from $15,000 to $18,000 for the surgeon’s fee. This does not include hospital fees, which can vary depending on the facility and the length of stay. The total cost may also differ based on the complexity of the case. It’s important to consult with your surgeon for a more accurate estimate based on your specific needs.

I first saw Dr Marcus Ling for sciatic nerve pain on my left leg. It was impacting my daily life as I could not sit or walk for long without feeling pain in my left leg. Dr Marcus first went through my MRI and X-ray scans to determine the cause of the pain. After confirming that it was due to a compressed nerve, he went through the various treatment options with me. He was clear in explaining the pros and cons of each option, as well as the risks involved. I opted for radiofrequency ablation procedure. I recovered well after the procedure and 1 week post procedure, the pain is largely gone. I am very thankful to Dr Marcus for his care throughout the process. It is such a relief to be pain-free again, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone experiencing similar issues.

Had my cervical spine disc replacement surgery with Dr. Marcus Ling. Very confident doctor with Impressive surgical skills. Surgery is spot on with an impressive team ( seen them very briefly in OT just before I got knocked off but can really feel their synergy) and recovery is rather fast too. 2 weeks post surgery, feeling great. Long way to go but I already look forward to my next long distance hut to hut trek. ☺️ Thanks doctor and his team, nurses and admin included, for the job well done. Highly recommended.
