When Is Spinal Decompression Surgery Needed?

Spinal decompression surgery is typically recommended when non-surgical treatments like physical therapy, medication, or injections have not provided sufficient relief, and the pain or discomfort from nerve compression is affecting your daily life. This surgery may be necessary if you have:

  • Severe pain: That doesn’t improve with conservative treatments.
  • Nerve damage: Causing weakness, numbness, or tingling in your limbs.
  • Herniated or bulging discs: That are pressing on nerves.
  • Spinal stenosis: (Narrowing of the spinal canal) that is causing pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.

Surgery is considered when symptoms are severe and persistent, and the risk of further nerve damage becomes a concern.

Types of Spinal Decompression Surgery

There are several types of spinal decompression surgery, depending on the underlying issue and location of the nerve compression:

Microdiscectomy

A procedure where part of a herniated disc is removed to relieve pressure on a nerve. This is commonly used for patients with leg pain (sciatica) or other nerve symptoms caused by disc problems. Microdisectomy can be performed using minimally invasive techniques such as using the endoscope.

Laminotomy

Removal of part of the vertebra (the lamina) to widen the spinal canal and relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This is often used for conditions like spinal stenosis.

In more severe cases, the surgeon may fuse two or more vertebrae together to stabilize the spine after decompression, especially when there is instability after removing part of the disc or bone.

How is Spinal Decompression Surgery Performed?

Spinal decompression surgery is usually done under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make a small incision near the affected area of the spine and access the spinal canal. Depending on the type of procedure, the surgeon will either remove part of a herniated disc, trim bone spurs, or remove part of the vertebra to relieve pressure on the nerves or spinal cord.

For minimally invasive surgeries like microdiscectomy, smaller incisions and specialized instruments are used, which can result in quicker recovery times.

How Long Does Spinal Decompression Surgery Take

The length of spinal decompression surgery depends on the complexity of the procedure and the number of levels of the spine being treated. On average:

  • Microdiscectomy/laminotomy: Usually takes no longer than 2 hours.
  • Spinal fusion: Can take several hours, depending on how many vertebrae need to be fused.

Your surgeon will discuss the expected duration of your specific surgery during your consultation.

Risks And Benefits Of Spinal Decompression Surgery

As with any surgery, spinal decompression comes with both potential risks and benefits.

  • Pain relief: Most patients experience significant relief from nerve pain, such as sciatica or back pain, after surgery.
  • Improved mobility: Surgery can restore movement and strength to the affected area, improving quality of life.
  • Reduced nerve damage: By relieving pressure on the nerves, surgery can prevent further nerve damage and associated symptoms, like numbness and weakness.
  • Infection: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection at the surgical site.
  • Bleeding: Though uncommon, there may be bleeding during the procedure.
  • Nerve damage: In rare cases, the surgery could cause new nerve damage or worsen existing symptoms.
  • Failed surgery: In some cases, the surgery may not provide full relief, or symptoms may return over time.

Before surgery, your doctor will discuss your specific risks and help you understand what you can expect.

Recovery Time for Spinal Decompression Surgery

Recovery after spinal decompression surgery varies depending on the type of surgery performed and the individual patient. Here’s a general timeline of what to expect:

Hospital Stay:

After the surgery, you may need to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days, depending on the complexity of the procedure. During this time, you’ll receive pain medications and care instructions to help manage your recovery at home.

Light Activities:

Most patients can return to light activities, such as walking or short periods of sitting, within 1 to 2 weeks. However, you should avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise during the first 4 to 6 weeks to allow your body to heal properly.

Strenuous Exercise:

It’s essential to refrain from strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or high-impact activities for at least 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your surgeon’s advice. Full recovery, especially if spinal fusion is performed, may take several months. Physical therapy is often recommended to help rebuild strength, improve flexibility, and support long-term recovery.

Your doctor will provide a tailored recovery plan and guide you through each stage to ensure the best outcome.

How Much Is Spinal Decompression Surgery In Singapore

The cost of spinal decompression surgery in a private hospital in Singapore typically ranges from $36,385 to $47,397, before insurance claims. This can vary depending on the complexity of the case, such as if multiple spine levels are treated or additional procedures like spinal fusion are required. It’s best to consult your surgeon for a more accurate cost based on your specific condition.

I first saw Dr Marcus Ling for sciatic nerve pain on my left leg. It was impacting my daily life as I could not sit or walk for long without feeling pain in my left leg. Dr Marcus first went through my MRI and X-ray scans to determine the cause of the pain. After confirming that it was due to a compressed nerve, he went through the various treatment options with me. He was clear in explaining the pros and cons of each option, as well as the risks involved. I opted for radiofrequency ablation procedure. I recovered well after the procedure and 1 week post procedure, the pain is largely gone. I am very thankful to Dr Marcus for his care throughout the process. It is such a relief to be pain-free again, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone experiencing similar issues.

Had my cervical spine disc replacement surgery with Dr. Marcus Ling. Very confident doctor with Impressive surgical skills. Surgery is spot on with an impressive team ( seen them very briefly in OT just before I got knocked off but can really feel their synergy) and recovery is rather fast too. 2 weeks post surgery, feeling great. Long way to go but I already look forward to my next long distance hut to hut trek. ☺️ Thanks doctor and his team, nurses and admin included, for the job well done. Highly recommended.
