Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways, often forming an “S” or “C” shape. The exact cause of scoliosis is not always clear, but there are several factors that may contribute to its development:
The symptoms of scoliosis can vary depending on the severity of the spinal curvature. Some people may not experience noticeable symptoms, while others may face physical discomfort or even complications. Common symptoms include:
It’s important to monitor the progression of scoliosis, especially in children, as the condition can worsen over time if left untreated.
Diagnosing scoliosis typically begins with a thorough evaluation by your doctor. The goal is to determine the degree of the spinal curvature and whether it’s progressing. Your doctor will assess your symptoms, medical history, and any risk factors, particularly if scoliosis runs in the family. Here’s what the diagnostic process usually involves:
Your doctor will perform a visual and physical exam to check for signs of scoliosis, such as uneven shoulders, hips, or an abnormally curved spine. They may ask you to bend forward to look for any asymmetry in the back.
An X-ray is the primary diagnostic tool for scoliosis. It provides clear images of the spine and helps measure the angle of the curvature. This measurement is essential in determining the severity of scoliosis and whether it requires treatment.
In some cases, an MRI may be used to obtain detailed images of the spinal cord and surrounding tissues. This is typically done if your doctor suspects underlying conditions, such as a tumor or spinal cord abnormality, that could be causing the scoliosis.
A CT scan may be recommended if more detailed images are needed or if the scoliosis is more complex. This can help give your doctor a clearer picture of the vertebrae and spine structure.
Treatment for scoliosis depends on the severity of the curvature, the age of the patient, and whether the curve is progressing. Options may include:
For mild scoliosis (typically under 20 degrees), your doctor may recommend simply monitoring the condition to ensure it does not worsen. Regular check-ups are important to track any changes in the curve.
If the curve is moderate (between 20-40 degrees) and the patient is still growing, wearing a brace may help prevent the curve from worsening. The brace does not cure scoliosis but can stop it from progressing during the growth phase.
Tailored exercises and stretches can help improve posture, strengthen the muscles around the spine, and alleviate pain. Physical therapy is often recommended in conjunction with other treatments for scoliosis.
For severe scoliosis (curves greater than 45-50 degrees) or cases where the curve is progressing rapidly, surgery may be considered. The most common surgical procedure is spinal fusion, where the curved vertebrae are fused together to prevent further curvature.
Exercise plays an important role in managing scoliosis, helping to strengthen muscles, improve posture, and relieve discomfort. While exercise alone cannot correct the curvature of the spine, it can improve the quality of life for people with scoliosis. Common exercises include:

I first saw Dr Marcus Ling for sciatic nerve pain on my left leg. It was impacting my daily life as I could not sit or walk for long without feeling pain in my left leg. Dr Marcus first went through my MRI and X-ray scans to determine the cause of the pain. After confirming that it was due to a compressed nerve, he went through the various treatment options with me. He was clear in explaining the pros and cons of each option, as well as the risks involved. I opted for radiofrequency ablation procedure. I recovered well after the procedure and 1 week post procedure, the pain is largely gone. I am very thankful to Dr Marcus for his care throughout the process. It is such a relief to be pain-free again, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone experiencing similar issues.Posted on Google![]()
