What Causes Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock to the calf. This condition occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, often by a herniated disc, bone spur, or muscle inflammation.

The most common cause is a slipped or herniated disc in the lower back, which can put pressure on the nerve roots. Other factors, such as spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine) or degenerative disc disease, can also contribute to sciatica.

Sciatica Symptoms

Sciatica is characterised by a range of symptoms that can vary in severity. Common signs include:

  • Sharp pain or a burning sensation that starts in the lower back or buttocks and travels down one leg.
  • Tingling or numbness in the affected leg or foot.
  • Muscle weakness in the leg or foot.
  • Difficulty moving or standing up straight due to the pain.

In some cases, the pain may worsen with activities like sitting, standing, or bending, while in other cases, it may come and go.

How is Sciatica Diagnosed?

To determine the cause of your sciatica, your doctor will take a detailed approach, gathering important information about your symptoms, medical history, and any activities or injuries that might have contributed to the pain.

Physical Examination:

Your doctor will assess your posture, movement, and strength to evaluate how the sciatic nerve and surrounding muscles are functioning.

X-ray:

An X-ray helps detect issues with the bones of the spine, such as fractures, bone spurs, or signs of spinal degeneration that may be putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging):

An MRI provides detailed images of the soft tissues, including discs, muscles, and nerves, helping to identify conditions like herniated discs, which can compress the sciatic nerve.

CT Scan (Computed Tomography):

A CT scan allows us to visualize the bones more clearly.

Sciatica Pain Relief at Home

For many people with sciatica, home remedies can help manage symptoms and provide relief. Here are some strategies that may help:

Sciatica Treatment

While many people find relief with at-home remedies, more serious cases of sciatica may require professional treatment. There are several options, ranging from non-surgical methods to surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

Non-surgical treatment options are often the first step in managing sciatica. These methods aim to reduce pain, improve mobility, and prevent the condition from worsening. Common non-surgical treatments include:

Physical Therapy: Working with a physical therapist can help you perform specific exercises to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve and strengthen muscles that support the spine.

Steroid Injections: Corticosteroid injections around the affected nerve root can provide temporary relief by reducing inflammation.

Medications: In addition to pain relievers, your doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants or nerve pain medications to manage discomfort.

Surgery for sciatica is typically considered when non-surgical treatments have not provided relief, or if there is severe nerve compression that risks permanent damage.

Spinal Decompression: Surgery for sciatica is typically considered when non-surgical treatments have not provided relief, or if there is severe nerve compression that risks permanent damage. Spinal decompression surgeries, including microdiscectomy and laminotomy, are common options for relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve

From my very first consultation to the post-operation follow-up, the experience has been outstanding and excellent. Dr Marcus Ling is a top notch surgeon who provided a clear and comprehensive explanation of my condition and the procedure, so I was fully informed and reassured at every step. I first saw Dr Marcus Ling for sciatic nerve pain on my left leg. It was impacting my daily life as I could not sit or walk for long without feeling pain in my left leg. Dr Marcus first went through my MRI and X-ray scans to determine the cause of the pain. After confirming that it was due to a compressed nerve, he went through the various treatment options with me. He was clear in explaining the pros and cons of each option, as well as the risks involved. I opted for radiofrequency ablation procedure. I recovered well after the procedure and 1 week post procedure, the pain is largely gone. I am very thankful to Dr Marcus for his care throughout the process. It is such a relief to be pain-free again, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone experiencing similar issues.

Extremely grateful to Dr. Marcus Ling for the excellent care he provided throughout my spine surgery journey. I underwent L4/L5 decompression, instrumentation and fusion, and from the first consultation to my post-operative follow-ups, Dr. Ling was professional, patient, and reassuring. He took the time to explain my MRI findings, the surgical options, the risks and benefits, and answered all of my questions thoroughly, which gave me confidence in proceeding with the operation. The surgery was successful, and my recovery has been progressing well. Throughout my follow-up visits, Dr. Ling has been attentive, caring, and meticulous in monitoring my healing. He never made me feel rushed and always listened carefully to my concerns, offering practical advice and reassurance. Had my cervical spine disc replacement surgery with Dr. Marcus Ling. Very confident doctor with Impressive surgical skills. Surgery is spot on with an impressive team ( seen them very briefly in OT just before I got knocked off but can really feel their synergy) and recovery is rather fast too. 2 weeks post surgery, feeling great. Long way to go but I already look forward to my next long distance hut to hut trek. ☺️ Thanks doctor and his team, nurses and admin included, for the job well done. Highly recommended.

He explained the surgery required and provided the necessary information for me to make the decision. I'm grateful that the surgery was successful and relieved of the sciatica pain.
